about
My first attempt at making a hymn for praising God, "O, Thou My Respite" is designed in the way of the four-chorus hymns of old, complete with the more antiquated language of day of yore. The piece is written for voice and harpsichord/clavichord, but organ and piano are also suitable for this piece.
The voice follows the same melody as the notes in the upper staff, and can be sung at higher or lower pitch, so long as the transposition is right and the notes with the melody. This is not to be sung soullessly; it is to be solemnly respectful but with joy and passion.
lyrics
O, Thou my respite
O, Thou my Saviour
O, Thou my rescue
O, Thou my strength
O, Ye who whisper
O, Ye who repair
O, Ye who thunder
O, Ye who reigns
Who but Thee holds pow'r;
Who else but Thee reigns?
Who but Thee is mighty:
My Lord, my God?
Holy be Thy Name
Father, Spirit, Son
Beautiful wond'rs
Rule Ye, o'er all
All tithes and good gifts;
Hosannas and psalms;
Pour'd unto Jesus
Who bore our Cross
Lo, King of great mercy,
Majestic Ye bleed;
Scourg'd in the nineth hour
On Golgotha;
Brothers and sisters,
Creatures of the Lord,
Bow thee to Him on
The Em'rald Throne;
When we shalt pass on
From this broken world,
We shalt at long last
Have this War won
All pain and all hatred,
All fears and all sins,
These things shalt but vanish
In Paradise;
How dearly I wait,
How doth ache these bones,
To see Thou 'fore me
Magnan'mously
Await I the Sleep
That shalt unchain me,
That I shalt know what
Bliss truly be;
For what am I but ash;
What am I but dust?
Thou alone art my want,
Thou art my all!
O, Thou my respite
O, Thou my Saviour
O, Thou my rescue
O, Thou my strength
O, Ye who whisper
O, Ye who repair
O, Ye who thunder
O, Ye who reigns
O, Lord, my God!
